Our story

The Outer Edge story

When we founded Outer Edge in 2010, we kept seeing the same thing with IT teams, especially those in life sciences. They’d build infrastructure fast, usually under pressure from “the business”, document it later, and hope everything held up if they were ever audited. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t. But it always created stress that didn’t need to exist.

Our founding team was built specifically to solve this. Rick Emlet, CEO and Co-Founder, brings over 40 years of systems and infrastructure strategy, leading organizations through complex IT challenges while keeping their business goals front and center. Jose Almonte, CTO and Co-Founder, leads our engineering team with 30+ years designing and operating validated infrastructure deployments across Azure, AWS, and private cloud environments. Jim Heisman, COO and Co-Founder, brings 35+ years navigating compliance, regulation, and real-world IT/infrastructure for highly regulated, technology-driven industries.

Together, we believed there had to be a better way. A way in which quality and speed could work together. A way to build a US-based senior engineering team without charging premium prices. Where 24/7 support didn’t mean sacrificing expertise. And where validated infrastructure, when required, could be deployed fast without compromising audit readiness.

We sell certainty

During these early years, the IT managed services industry was becoming more and more commoditized. Faster builds, lower rates, interchangeable vendors. On paper, everything looked the same. In practice, it wasn’t. Speed was prioritized, systems were patched together, and accountability was unclear once things went live.

Since the beginning, we saw a different way of operating. We believed speed and quality didn’t have to work in opposition; where we could build a fully US-based team without treating geography as a premium upcharge. Where 24/7 support still meant senior expertise. And where validated infrastructure could move fast without compromising audit readiness. Not as promises, but as a way of working.

But believing it and building it are different things. We accepted higher labor costs to ensure we could deliver premium quality. We stayed smaller and more selective when sacrificing quality for growth would’ve been easier. We built slowly and deliberately in a “move fast at all costs” industry.

Our operating model was forged in life sciences, where there is no room for error. We established a working model where you didn’t have to choose between moving fast and staying compliant. Our clients have never failed an audit. That’s not luck. It’s treating infrastructure, documentation, and validation as one system from day one. It’s why teams—regulated or non-regulated—trust Outer Edge.

The hosting industry sells space and uptime. Those are table stakes. Outer Edge sells certainty.

  • Certainty that IT and Quality operate as peers, not handoffs.
  • Certainty that validation is inherent to the environment, not layered on after the fact.
  • Certainty that when audits happen, the conversation is procedural, not defensive.
  • Certainty that you’re not paying for more hardware or services than your business needs.
  • Certainty that leadership is not relying on heroics to stay compliant.

The Outer Edge ethos

We believe decisions should outlive the moment they’re made. If you can’t defend a choice six months later, it wasn’t the right choice. We build for durability, not convenience.

We believe compliance is a design problem, not a documentation problem. Governance isn’t something you retrofit. It’s something you embed from the first conversation.

We believe Quality and IT succeed together or fail apart. When these two groups are adversarial, checking each other’s work, everyone loses. When the two groups partner from the start, the work holds up.

We believe speed without traceability is simply chaos in motion. Moving fast matters. But only if you can explain what you built, why you built it, and how it connects to everything else.

We believe sustainable compliance is the only kind that counts. If it takes heroics to stay compliant, you’re not compliant. You’re hoping nothing breaks until Monday.

We believe saying no is as important as saying yes. Every bad-fit project we turn down keeps us who we are. Selectivity isn’t about being difficult. It’s about protecting what we stand for.

Our promise

20+ years in and our values haven’t changed. We turn down work that compromises our ethos or value system. We maintain a fully US-based team when offshore would certainly boost margins. We prioritize discipline and rigor over volume.

Every choice we make protects every client we serve. When we commit to your infrastructure, it means we won’t compromise. Not on quality. Not on compliance. Not on you.
